Land Air bus system proposed by a Chinese firm.
The concept is very promising for high density cities with a lot of traffic. For those of you who have driven in cities such as Toronto and San Francisco I can tell you that there are many lost driving lanes dedicated to street cars, buses and taxis. Imagine the ability to share them with a mobile platform as proposed.
The pictures do not do this concept justice, so check out the video below:
My only concern is making the system safe for cars to co-exist with the land air bus. Many drivers unconsciously slow down in tight spaces. Examples include tunnels, barriers without shoulders. That may not be much of an issue because traffic is generally slow moving in cities. Personally, tight spaces have the opposite effect on me, like a watermelon seed pinched between the fingers.
Lastly, I disagree with the proposed approach to turning while cars are underneath. The margin of error is high. But I don’t think we should dismiss the design, refinements such as blocking traffic from going underneath before turning are viable options.
